4 Foods You Should Kick Out of Your Kitchen

Many of us are trying to eat healthier. Whether it’s all of the time or just occasionally that you think about it, nutrition is an important part of being healthy and living a longer, more fulfilling life. You probably know that you should eat your leafy greens, but there are some types of foods that are easy to overlook as bad for you or pretend that you don’t eat as much as you do. Being more aware of these unhealthy foods will make them easier to avoid, so here are a few foods that you should ban from your kitchen.

Refined Sugar

You probably already know that you should limit the amount of refined sugar that you eat, but it’s actually better if you cut it out except for very special occasions. Not only will it cause you to gain weight, but sugar also increases the risk of diabetes. Not only is diabetes deeply inconvenient, but can undermine the health of other systems such as extremities and eyesight.

You might need to buy it occasionally when you need to bake a treat for your child’s birthday or another special occasion, but only buy what you need.  I do not believe in wasting food, so find a way to use the rest for something else like Hummingbird food or throw it away if it’s too tempting to keep around. You should also get rid of store-bought fruit juices and other sugary items that masquerade as healthy.

Deli Meats

A lot of people don’t know it, but processed meat can be extremely harmful to your digestive system. The nitrates and carrageenan in deli meats have been linked to colon cancer. Deli meats also tend to be very high in sodium, and eating high amounts of processed red meat is also associated with breast cancer, too.

Reduced-Fat Peanut Butter

If you’re still thinking that low-fat is always better, update your thinking. Many kinds of fat are actually good for you, including the kind that’s found in peanut butter. You also need to read the labels to learn what they’re replacing the fat with to make the product taste better. In the case of peanut butter, they add more sugar, which is definitely worse than the fat.

Healthy peanut butter is easy to find and will give you those healthy fats without sneaking any unhealthy things in.

Ramen Noodles

Yeah, it’s a quick and cheap way to fill your belly when you’re in college and absolutely broke, but ramen is best left behind. One way to determine if a food is good for you is to look at what nutritional value it offers. Although Ramen has some iron and a few other nutrients, it has very little fiber, manganese, or vitamin A.

When you’re reading the packaging, you might think that just under 200 calories are very reasonable for a mid-afternoon snack, but one package is actually two servings, which definitely ups the number of calories that you’re actually consuming.

If you’re looking for ways to eat healthier, stay leaner, and avoid health concerns later in life, pay attention to the obvious unhealthy food choices, but also be aware of the less-than-obvious choices that will create negative consequences for your body. Instead, opt for whole foods and natural ways to flavor your food.
