You hear the word Probiotics a lot when it comes to having a healthy gut but do you know why it is so important? Probiotics are just one aspect to support of a healthy gut. Here we will find out why it’s important to have a healthy gut, what can make it unhealthy, how to keep it healthy and the benefits that come with a healthy gut.
Why It’s Important to Have a Healthy Gut?
Your gut supports your immune system and creates good bacteria that fights off bacteria that enter your body. The health of your gastrointestinal system is very important to your overall health and well being. Your gut wall houses 70 percent of the cells that make up your immune system.
What Makes a Gut Unhealthy?
Unhealthy or imbalanced gut health is linked to many things including hormonal imbalances, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, chronic fatigue, anxiety, depression, and other chronic health problems.
You have probably heard the term “Leaky Gut” before but what does that mean?
A “Leaky Gut” is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine becomes damaged, causing undigested food particles, toxic waste products, and bacteria to “leak” through the intestines and flood the bloodstream.
What Causes a Leaky Gut?
The most common toxic suspects are gluten, sugar, dairy and the excessive consumption of alcohol. It can also be caused by over the counter painkillers, steroids, and antibiotics. Do you notice when you take antibiotics you usually have constipation and or diarrhea? This is because it’s damaging the lining and is why they recommend having a probiotic with your antibiotic.
Symptoms that may occur if you have a “Leaky Gut”?
- Chronic diarrhea, constipation, gas or bloating
- Nutritional deficiencies
- Poor immune system
- Headaches, brain fog, memory loss
- Excessive fatigue

- Take a Probiotic: Probiotics are good bacteria that line your gut and are responsible for nutrient absorption and supporting your immune system which increases your gut health tremendously. Seek probiotics that contain the following species: Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus brevis, Bifidobacterium lactis (B. animalis), and Bifidobacterium longum.
- Cut Out Sugar and Processed Foods: This is a given, limit the intake of these types of food they have no value to your health.
- Eat More Plants and Dietary Fiber: Grains like brown rice, as well as fruits like apples and especially leafy greens.
- Limit Antibiotics: Antibiotics kill all bacteria in the gut good and bad and can take a year to rebuild.
- Get Dirty: Soil has wonderful healing elements that we need. Gardening or weeding can serve as a way of boosting our immune systems.
- Eat Fermented Foods (commonly referred to as Probiotic foods):
- Yogurt (unsweetened organic)
- Kimchi (a Korean staple, cabbage, and radishes, with a variety of seasonings including chili powder, scallions, garlic, ginger, and jeotgal)
- Apple cider vinegar
